From the American Progress Report, September 16, 2009:
"Under Clinton, the number of Americans in poverty dropped 16.9 percent; it increased 26.1 percent under Bush. Similarly, the number of children in poverty declined 24.2 percent under Clinton and jumped 21.4 percent under Bush. The 2008 poverty rate was at an 11-year high of 13.2 percent, with 39.8 million people in poverty (including 14 million children). The Bush years saw an additional 8.3 million people fall below the poverty line.
As The Wonk Room's Pat Garofalo noted, "This [Census] report does not take into account the hemorrhaging of jobs that occurred in early 2009, when more than 700,000 jobs were disappearing each month, so these numbers are likely to rise even higher. And they would be headed higher still if it were not for the economic stimulus package that was passed in February."

"Okay Rush, slavery was not a good thing for the millions of African Americans who were enslaved, raped and beaten."
-CJP
Why is it when we talk about slavery, we always think of the "Blacks"?
You dont seem interested in the fact that the requirements to be living in poverty have changed during that time. The poverty level increased while the average annual income dropped. Thus making it seem like a horrible increase. You also are taking into account the large percent of hispanic immigrants that end up living in poverty.

Thanks cons.
How long before the crazy cons up the clammer for more tax cuts for the uber rich?
I don't know about Reaper but poor people never gave me a job. This class warfare won't help either side. You see the problem with taxing a wealthy person is that if they are wealthy they can move to a Country that has much lower tax rates. I am a blue collar worker that believes in the free market. Those who work hard will succeed it takes effort and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. We tax the Rich to much as it is. High taxes discourage business from forming and expanding. Look around people does anybody feel like raising taxes was a good idea. We don't want to chase away the Golden Goose we want to make it a nest so it stays here at home. Healthy Economies mean more money for all. In case you work for the Government and don't know the Economy is not healthy.

What country do they move to?
---
How about we just put the tax rates back to where they were with Clinton? W lowered the rates, after Clinton, and where are we now?
Anon, do you believe in the trickle down theory?
"What country do they move to?"

Keep raising taxes and find out!
Maybe the Cayman Islands?
"Maybe the Cayman Islands? "
Oh brother.
"Oh brother."
-Reaper
What, you dont like the Cayman Islands?
Reaper many small countries open there arms to rich Americans Panama, Croatia,Belize,Cyprus. This is just a few. The fact is Reaper that rich people are not a resource for poor people to harvest from. They are like you and me except they did something that resulted in a monetary gain for themselves. They earned it they should keep it, because they provide the jobs, we in America need. If you want more taxes lets lower income taxes and raise sales tax by the same number. In this way we capture all the Hustlers and street Pimps, drug dealers, and Hookers. When these people buy food or any goods we tax them. This means a whole new group of people who were not paying taxes now are. And it didn't cost working folks.

I have to agree with everything in your last comment except taxing food. A person can only eat so much and not taxing food will help the lower income families.
Reaper
since you hate rich people having money, why dont you boycott Microsoft? Dont use anything that runs Microsoft. I hope your on a Mac, oh wait that is another rich guys company. Maybe you should boycott all technologies.
Brandon, you have not seen the families that I have. There is a culture of criminal behavior out on the street capturing these tax cheats is important to get things back on track. Brandon I know you feel for lower income families but trust me they will be fine. I know because I have been one. We need all Americans to pay their due. Even the Ones in Congress.

Living in poverty is something people from King, Pierce and Thurston counties cant imagine. Unemployment in my county was at 14% and the people I know who were on unemployment werent hurting one bit or looking for more work!
