Harry Hay was not a pedophile. He died at 90, and for over 40 years he had a very committed relationship with a gay man roughly his age.
I have found nothing about Harry Hay which suggests that he was ever a pedophile or was ever accused of child molesting or anything of the sort.
On the contrary, Harry Hay was the opposite of a pedophile -- a 180 degree polar extreme opposite.
Harry Hay said that, during the Depression, when he was 13, he started working to help support his family, and when he was 14 he started looking for sex with older men. He was sexually active at 14 and he wanted sex with an older man. He was not interested in having sex with someone younger than himself. He was not a pedophile or a child molester.
His point was that, if he could work at rough physical labor as an adult at age 13, he should be able to start having sex with older people at 14. He did not want the statutory rape laws to apply to him because that would mean what he was doing was wrong, and he did not believe he was doing anything wrong. He called himself a child who was molesting adults, not the other way around.
In no way was Harry Hay ever an adult who molested children. He was interested sexually in adults, not in children.
The Right-Wing is trying to smear Obama's appointee, Kevin Jennings, by saying that Jennings was "inspired by a pedophile", Harry Hay. However, I have not found one single fact anywhere to support the accusation that Harry Hay was a pedophile.

No, he did not. Hay defended the right of a young person like himself to initiate sex with an older man without it being considered criminal.
Hay was not defending any older man who initiated sex with an under-age child. He was interested in the welfare and well-being of the child, not the older man.
Kevin Jennings had a similar situation with his student, Brewster. Jennings wanted to make sure that Brewster was not emotionally or psychologically scarred by what he had done. The welfare of the child was Jennings only concern.

In this case, Kevin Jennings was dealing with a boy who was 16 -- the legal age of consent -- so this is a non-issue.
However, had the boy, Brewster, in fact been 15, the answer is not so simple.
Counseling the boy to stay away from older men is one thing. Forcing him to bring a statutory rape case could have been extremely damaging to the child.
This was a young gay boy who was very much in the closet about his sexual activities and was feeling very guilty about what he was doing. Apparently, he had not even told his parents, and Kevin Jennings may have been the only adult in whom he felt comfortable confiding.
If the boy had been forced to bring a statutory rape case and "come out", his parents might have thrown him out of the house -- which has happened in so many other situations. The risk to the child was even greater since it would have been publicly disclosed that the boy himself was the instigator. He may have ended up homeless in the streets.
The boy might also have committed suicide out of feelings of guilt. As you know, the rate of teen-age suicide is much higher among gay kids than among straight ones.
Kevin Jennings wanted to help this boy, not destroy his life. According to Brewster, now in his 40's, Kevin Jennings was the best friend and most helpful person he had in his life at the time, and Jennings handled the situation in the best possible way.
Brewster says that he is now a well-adjusted and self-confident adult, and he gives Jennings huge credit for helping him over this difficult period in his life.

How do you propose to do that, HOTR, when the child himself is the instigator? Should the child be sent to reform school, or to prison?
Most children tell their parents when they have been molested by an adult. Even a 3-year old told his parents this week in a highly publicized case in Florida.
There must have been a reason why "Brewster" did not feel comfortable telling his parents. Otherwise, he would have had no reason to confide in his teacher, Kevin Jennings.

Actually, HOTR, this whole discussion is not really about Harry Hay.
It's about an unjustified slime attack by Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, The Washington Times and other Right-Wing media on Kevin Jennings, President Obama's appointee to the Education Department.
This attack was based upon two lies:
1. That the boy whom Kevin Jennings was advising was 15, when he was actually 16 at the time -- the legal age of consent.
2. That Kevin Jennings was "inspired by a pedophile", Harry Hay, when I have seen no evidence at all that Harry Hay was ever a pedophile.
For good measure, they have dragged NAMBLA into the discussion when NAMBLA had nothing to do with this situation.
They are claiming that Jennings should have made the boy bring statutory rape charges against the older man, which may well have had a very damaging effect on the boy.
This fight was initiated by Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, etc. They raised the issues of child abuse and pedophilia. We are responding to their attacks on Kevin Jennings, which we believe are totally unjustified.
