Mikhail Gorbachev Says Obama Deserves the Nobel Peace Prize

The former Soviet leader tells Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Obama "deserved" the Nobel Prize, as he did, and draws a sort of parallel between them:

"I won it unexpectedly, and he won it unexpectedly. And i think I deserved it -- time has passed, and that's clear," Gorbachev says, laughing that he'd have to be a fool not to praise himself.

"America means a lot," Gorbachev said. "That's why we have to support a president of such stature who gave his own country and the world such a strong push forward. And it's already showing real results. That's honorable."

"You can complain about other things, but that is deserved," said Gorbachev of Obama's Nobel. "He'll now be reponble for following the path along which the Nobel Committee pushed him."

Of course, my Conservative friends will have their usual snit-fit when they hear about these comments from Gorbachev. They still believe that Ronald Reagan was responsible for the demise of Communism in the Soviet Union. The simple fact is that Mikhail Gorbachev is the man most responsible for ending the Communist system in the old Soviet Union and ushering in a new era of democracy there -- which is why Gorby won his Nobel Peace Prize.

Denis Mukwege: Doctor dedicated to helping rape victims

The epidemic of sexual violence in Democratic Republic of Congo visits most of us in the form of statistics, like the 27,000 rapes reported in a single year in a single province, or the 70 per cent of the women of one town who had been brutally assaulted.

The crisis visits Dr Denis Mukwege in a different way. It's there every day in the waiting room of his surgery in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, the province where the first statistic was recorded.

An average of 10 women come every day, sometimes from hundreds of miles away, having been subjected to some of the worst acts of sadism imaginable. "It is important to point out that this sexual terrorism is done in a methodical manner," the 53-year-old told the US Senate last year. "Generally the victims are raped by several men at a time, one after another; in public, in front of parents, husbands, children or neighbours. Rape is followed by mutilations or other corporal torture."

In a country where sexual violence has reached levels never seen before and that no one can fully explain, Dr Mukwege is the man who has devoted his life to trying to repair the damage done to women often left for dead.

He was, for a long time, the only gynaecologist treating rape wounds in Congo. At the Panzi hospital in Bukavu, he performs as many as half a dozen surgeries a day; so far he has treated 21,000 women. His pioneering work has helped thousands of these women reclaim something of their physical selves and begin to heal some of the psychological wounds.

A pastor's son who saw at first hand the suffering of women in rural areas who would have to travel bleeding on the backs of donkeys when pregnancies went wrong, he decided to become a doctor. After studying obstetrics and gynaecology in Angers, France, he returned to Lemera, Kivu, to set up a clinic.

This effort was burned to the ground in 1996 during the first civil war. After settling in Bukavu to try again, he found that the maternity ward at Panzi was overrun by women who had been raped and that the numbers were growing. Dr Mukwege's response was to set up a ward for victims of sexual violence, and his work was recognised with the Olof Palme Prize last year, when he was also named African of the Year and given the UN human rights prize.

The doctor has repeatedly been asked to explain why the horrors are occurring in Congo but he limits himself to explaining what is happening.

"Here it is not rape because you have desire for a woman, it's rape because you want to destroy that person through her private parts," he said recently. "There is no appropriate expression, because if these were men, were shot by a gun, we would call it genocide. But it is another type of genocide."

Like I have said before:"This is a slap in the face to everyone who EARNED the nobel peace prize."

Why did Obama win? No one can answer that question, this man was by far more deserving of this award than Obama! This isnt the only story either, there are alot of individuals fighting around the world for peace and they will never get any recognition but Obama makes a few promises and wins.

CJP and Raygun, you should be ashamed of defending Obama on this topic!

BB, technically I haven't defended Obama and his Nobel (I don't remember anyway on this blog), but you really don't realize how far Obama is ahead us, ahead of you, in what he says and does. The guy is really smart, and ahead of his time.

I am not saying Obama isnt smart. I believe he is very smart but that shouldnt win you a nobel peace prize. I am saying there are alot of people who should be in front of him to recieve the nobel peace prize.

If you havent defended Obama on this topic, then I apologize to you. I am sorry!

Oh that changes everything. If Gorbachev says it then Obama truly deserves the prize. lol. What a joke.

Raygun, I care. Who do you think is going to take these jobs if they don't pay. I, for one, would like these companies to make money so they can pay us back. If the object was to kill these companies then why give them the money.

Let the money grubbing bankers leave. They wouldn't of needed the bailouts if they knew what they were doing.

"Who do you think is going to take these jobs if they don't pay."

HOTR, Goldman Sachs bonus pool divided by employees is over 500 k per employee. Ill take the job and probably do better than they have done. They suck.

hispanicontheright said...

Raygun I'm only pointing out that we as taxpayers own these companies. I want them to do well so they can pay us back. You cannot possible hire the best people if you're only going to pay them 10% what other companies pay. Believe it or not there are good and profitable companies out there that have good employees. I want those employees working for us. Unfortunately they won't work for us because they can do much better elsewhere. Try to stop the liberal hate of big business for a moment and think about this. I am assuming Raygun that you are a good worker and deserve your pay. Would you leave your company to work for a company that will only pay you 10% of your current earnings? I don't think so. These companies we own will only be able to hire workers that nobody wants.

JC HPOR, the GD bankers are charlatans. They created a bunch of mumbo jumbo that no one can understand. Are they smart because no one knows what the f they are talking about?

hispanicontheright said...

I have no problem with you saying they are charlatans. Believe me, I'm not defending them. All I'm saying is that why did we bail them out if we want them to do well?

RayGun said...

HP, we bailed them out, because we are so confused as to what they are doing.

Think about it. They aren't even passing paper around (money), they are passing "0"s and "1"'s (balances on electronic bank statements).

Its all bs. Its all a con game...

hispanicontheright said...

I guess we'll just have to agree that the money used to bail them out was a total waste.

JC, HPAC, money (paper), (0s, 1s), what does it mean, in the end?

Plz watch "Whatever Works"...

My logic (simplify and repeat the truth)

I'll be looking for it.
