Social Security and Medicare

I find that I have a lot of common ground with my Conservative friends who contact me about these posts.

Our differences relate to the best way of keeping this country strong and prosperous, and making it work well for the greatest number of people who live here.

Economic and political systems that work well for the few, but not the many, always collapse -- whether they are Communism, Feudalism, or unregulated, uncontrolled Capitalism.

Only a balanced system has worked effectively -- free enterprise with some government regulations and controls to keep rampant greed from running away with and destroying the system.

Social Security and Medicare have solved huge problems in our country which used to afflict the elderly. Native Americans and African tribes take in their elderly and care for them for the rest of their lives in the same tents and wigwams as the rest of the family. For us, Social Security and Medicare take the place of those family tents and wigwams.

You say that the native americans and african tribes do it right? Well isnt that the family that is doing that. Not the goverment. Wow you just made the arguement for everyone that we need to believe in what the constitution says and not in the goverment. People need to make the choices for themselves not the goverment. People can take care of their own family they dont need the government to step in and intervene. I believe in the constitution and the more i read your blog the more i see that you dont!

Anon get a name. You're a nut. Yes, 80 percent of the people can take care of themselves, but the remainder may need help. You never know Anon, you may one day be part of the remainder.

someone started this website, www.ipolitics.com. It is a political gossip website. Right now all I see is right wing posts. I think we need to add some left leaning stuff online as well. Everything you know about legislators is fair game. We need to call all hands on deck so our voices are heard! Finally, we can tell people what really happens behind the scenes! Bring on some Republicn dirt!!

Have they? Social security was developed in 1935, I believe, and we still had a major poverty problem for seniors in the 1960's. So has social securty fixed the poverty problem or has it just made more Americans dependant on the government?

I am currently reading about millionaire families who give their children money to pay off debt or start companies and the statistics are showing those children earn far less and rely on their parents income far more. Perhaps giving people money ISNT the answer.

Again BB, its a forced savings account. We know you cons know best about all things, including when you're getting ripped of by hedge fund managers that abscond with all your money, and you will never lose your entire life savings (of course not), but just in case, SS is there.

Its pretty hard to lose your ENTIRE life saving, when you actually save something.

How many people on SS do you expect, actually saved for retirement?

RayGun said...

"THEN GIVE ME THE CHOICE TO CHOOSE FOR MYSELF! "

BB, you can't guarantee you won't lose your life savings. Then we have to take care of your sorry butt. We, as society, are not going to let 20 percent of the nation live in the streets. That, 20 percent, is my guess on how many will fail to provide for themselves, even if 100 percent are identical to you BB. Life just doesn't always work out as you plan, so planning needs to be mandatory. We know you cons know best, as the last 8 years have shown.

Brandon said...

-Raygun

That is the typical liberal BS, when in history would 20% lose their life saving following my plan? NEVER!!! I would guess following my plan about .001% would lose their life saving thru fraud or some kind of scam or get rich quick deal. But that would be following my plan, would it?

Brandon said...

"BB, you can't guarantee you won't lose your life savings. Then we have to take care of your sorry butt."

If, if something happend to me, I wouldnt come to your for help. I would go back to work or go to my family for help.

BB, you cant guarantee shit. I don't want your word, I want mandatory action.

BB, how the fk are we going to make sure everyone is following your plan? You hate regulations.

RayGun said...

Comon BB, are we just going to trust that everyone follows your plan?

Didn't your beloved RayGun say about the Russians regarding nuclear disarmament, "Trust, but verify"? Is your beloved leader RayGun, a communist...?

Brandon said...

"BB, how the fk are we going to make sure everyone is following your plan? You hate regulations."
-Raygun

I dont care if they are or are not! My point is there no excuse why people cant be saving for retirement. There are a few reasons why people maybe broke but only a few. You make it seem as if the world is working against you to make sure you die broke!

The FACT is most people are to lazy to save for retirement, so why should you pay for them being lazy?

Brandon said...

"BB, you cant guarantee shit. I don't want your word, I want mandatory action."
-Raygun

You also cant guarantee shit! Who are you to tell me to fund a program that may not exist when I turn 65? There is a much high risk to reward ratio with the government, than with my plan!

Brandon said...

-Raygun

You still didnt answer my question!

"...when in history would 20% lose their life saving following my plan? "

RayGun said...

"The FACT is most people are to lazy to save for retirement, so why should you pay for them being lazy? "
--
Exactly BB, so that's why they are forced to pay into SS.

And even if they save and for some reason their cockeyed plans don't work out, then SS is their backup.

RayGun said...

"Who are you to tell me to fund a program that may not exist when I turn 65?"
--
The government may not exist either when you're 65 BB. All the pretty paper you covet so much may be worthless when you are 65.

Progressives are realists, and we know the real world doesn't always turn as we plan. You may see first hand some day, of what I say. Maybe you'll get married. Maybe you'll plan on 2 kids. Then you have one kid, then the next time you try, you have triplets. And 1 of them has major health problems, that insurance only pays 80 percent of. So there goes 10k per year of after tax money. What now BB?

You haven't even begun a family yet BB, so you're known world only revolves around taking care of your own self.

BB, my guesstimate is that 80 percent of the population usually does the right thing. And roughly 80 percent get through life without major problems as mentioned above. But because of that 20 percent, myself and most rest of the world, see the need for regulations and mandatory savings accounts, and mandatory auto insurance, and mandatory health insurance. So I think we are all stuck paying, unless you all start a new republic such as Texass, which I am all for.

I say Texass, rather than Alaska, because you cons know global warming is a lie so the imaginary extra hot Texass won't bother you at all :-)

CJP said...

Ray Gun, that was excellent.

By the way, did you mention the "extra hot air in Texass"?

Brandon said...

"So there goes 10k per year of after tax money. What now BB?"
-Raygun

Its called an HSA which is pre taxed income!

Brandon said...

"BB, my guesstimate is that 80 percent of the population usually does the right thing."
-Raygun

So you would punish 80 percent to benifit 20 percent? Why not punish the 20 percent and give freedom to the 80 percent. If uncle Sam wasnt there to bailout the 20 percent, I bet they would get their act together.

All I want is the freedom to make that call for myself, "why do you hate freedom?"-Raygun

RayGun said...

For family coverage, the maximum annual HSA contribution is $5,950.

Brandon said...

"because you cons know global warming is a lie so the imaginary extra hot Texass won't bother you at all :-)"
-Raygun

Its funny how your mocking me about global warming and you dont even know if it is real! Talk about living in fantasy land. I am not saying its real or fake, just that I dont know, yet!

RayGun said...

"All I want is the freedom to make that call for myself

--
Because you can't make and keep a promise that you won't be one of the 20 percent.

Do you promise you won't get in a car wreck?

Brandon said...

"For family coverage, the maximum annual HSA contribution is $5,950."
-Raygun

And a family can get coverage for a premium of about $450/month with a 5-10k out of pocket cost. Even if you max it out EVERY SINGLE YEAR you would only be short a few grand. Sounds like you need to get a second job, if that were to happend.

Why do you hate health insurance so much? Maybe you should look into HSA?

RayGun said...

"Its funny how your mocking me about global warming and you dont even know if it is real!"
--
But we do know cons mostly think global warming is bogus, and we do know cons have been wrong about absolutely everything, so ...

Funny, now though, only 20 percent of the US call themselves cons. But if you vote for a con, you are a con, so unfortunately that's probably more than 20 percent. Damn.

Brandon said...

"Because you can't make and keep a promise that you won't be one of the 20 percent.

-Raygun

I dont need to promise you anything, just stop paying for people who dont want to buy insurance. GIVE ME FREEDOM!!!

RayGun said...

"Why do you hate health insurance so much? Maybe you should look into HSA? "

Been using it for years. Doesn't carry over from year to year so that sucks.

And I do not like for profit health insurance. Why, because their profit depends on paying out as little as possible.

RayGun said...

"I dont need to promise you anything, just stop paying for people who dont want to buy insurance"

Who the fk is going to pay for my car when the uninsured runs into?

"GIVE ME FREEDOM", and if I don't want to take responsibility then I don't have to. Is that what you are saying BB?

Brandon said...

"Who the fk is going to pay for my car when the uninsured runs into?

"GIVE ME FREEDOM", and if I don't want to take responsibility then I don't have to. Is that what you are saying BB?"
-Raygun

If someone hits your car then you sue the shit out of them! If you want to be irresponsible and not get car or health insurance that should be your choice.

Why do you think you have to right to set what level of coverage I MUST have!

Most congress men and women, in my opinion, think we need to have health insurance that pays for almost every single medical bill. I believe people who are broke should only buy health insurance for major medical problems. If your broke, why would you go to the doctor for a cold or something minor?

Brandon said...

"And I do not like for profit health insurance. Why, because their profit depends on paying out as little as possible."

DUH!!! What for profit company doesnt want to make a profit. They have two choices charge more or pay out less. Have you looked into those HSAs yet?

Brandon said...

"Funny, now though, only 20 percent of the US call themselves cons."
-Raygun

Why is that funny? Last time I checked about 33% called themselves democrats, 33% independants and 33% called themselves republicans.

Also the last time I checked, the independants are already siding more with republicans than the democrats on certain issues.

RayGun said...

"Why do you think you have to right to set what level of coverage I MUST have!"

You must pull your own weight BB.

Isn't that what you cons tell everyone?

If you get this cheap ass insurance, and the docs cut you deals, then the people that pay their real share are charged extra, to make up your difference.

Is that fair BB?

RayGun said...

BB, maybe you should just work harder. Get another job, so you can pay your fair share of medical bills. Pay ahead now, as once you have kids, you will no longer be paying your fair share, compared to me.

And our parents BB, they aren't paying their fare share. Do you follow what I am talking about?

Brandon said...

"And our parents BB, they aren't paying their fare share. Do you follow what I am talking about?"

Its funny how your complaining about a Liberal idea like tax cuts to the poor and raising the taxes on the rich! Liberals dont want their stupid minorities with ten kids to pay taxes!

Brandon said...

"If you get this cheap ass insurance, and the docs cut you deals, then the people that pay their real share are charged extra, to make up your difference."
-Raygun

I think this is your dumbest comment so far! Congradulations!

Why would getting a deal on my coverage cost anyone else and why would I be getting any deals on my coverage simply because I have cheap insurance? ITS CHEAP BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF COVERAGE!!!

The warden says: the exit is sold
If you want a way out - silver and gold

broken back to the ceiling
broken nose to the floor
I scream at the silence that's crawling
Crawls under the door

There's a rope around my neck
And there's a trigger in your gun
Jesus, say something!
I am someone - I am someone

Captains and kings in the ship's hold
They came to collect silver and gold

I pay for a portion of my health insurance, my employer pays the other portion. But companies can get better rates because they buy in volume.

That's why a public option would be great, as it would be a large pool of people and reduce costs.

Why is the public option going to cost tax paying anything? (Serious question)

So your defending the public option and you dont even understand how it works? Are you only concerned with how it will effect you?

If the problem, in your opinion, is profits from private insurance companies then why doesnt the government just run a non profit government coop? This wouldnt cost the tax payer anything and would allow for cheap insurance for the uninsured?

JC BB, that's what they've been talking about. Don't you remember how you claimed the government would drive the poor innocent insurance companies out of business?

The government will still have to kick in some money, as there are a lot of uninsured.

If you want health reform so bad, why arent you fighting to get something passed right now and work out the other parts later. Pass some tort reforms and make it easier for insurance companies to compete across state lines. I think that is something we both can agree on, yet the democrats havent passed that yet!

RayGun said...

Wrong again BB:

"Residents of the State of Washington who register a vehicle as insured but fail to present proof upon request by a an officer of the law or other state authority, or who let their insurance lapse will face some severe penalties. Penalties include the restriction or revocation of both operator’s license and the uninsured vehicles registration. Getting the vehicle registered again will require proof of insurance, paying a $500.00 statutory fine and $85.00 fee to reinstate their registration, there may be additional DMV fees for reinstating the motor vehicle operator’s license. In addition, for three years following a violation, the motorist will have to regularly submit proof of insurance to the DMV and if for any reason their policy is cancelled, the insurance agency is obligated to report it."

Funny, my ex only paid $200 and never lost her licence and never got insurance!

RayGun said...

Show me how much difference that would make in cost. 10 percent I am guessing.

If you call that severe. Like I said over the last five years I would have saved $4500, that is alot of DMV fees.

Brandon said...

Who cares if its only 1%, why NOT do it now??? What are they waiting for???

The democrats are using those to items are black male for the stupid public option. They know if they pass any health care coverage reform and it doesnt include the public option, they will never get it passed!

The dems are the dems problem, not the republicans, like they want you to believe!

RayGun said...

BB, the con whiners would cry a river of tears about any penalties for not having health coverage. Ohhhh, my precious freedom, ohhhh, someone telling me what to do, ohhh leave me alone. Sound familiar?

Do you know he has had one on ones with both Bush and Obama, while they were presidents?

No the tears would come from both sides, conservatives would complain about freedom and liberals woudl complain about how this would only hurt the poor and why we should just increase taxes to fix the problem!

I am open to a debate on why we should have mandatory car insurance. Conservative believe in enforcing the laws we do have. Liberals just want to make things illegal with minor consequences. I say lets bust some heads for breaking the law, which in this case is not having car insurance.

RayGun said...

My girlfriend and I are going because we paid off all of our debts except the property and its going to be her 21st birthday on November 3rd. I have family over there and we will be staying with them, they own a pub. ;)

Should be a really fun trip! Blarney castle, cliffs of mohor and etc.

Lawyer fees are not that high, but your right that these people do have alot of protections. Why do we protect these people? Why should they be allowed to keep one car and their home during a bankrupcy? (I believe that is one rule for bankrupcy, keeping a primary residence and one vehicle)

RayGun said...

I think Florida is the only one that allows you to keep your home and thats why OJ moved down there. Washington state, you are only allowed to keep 40k of home value, but the rest you can be sued for.

Brandon said...

"you are only allowed to keep 40k of home value"
-Raygun

Why in the hell do they do that? Most people dont have over 40K of equity in there homes. This is an example of the junk I am talking about. Why do we make bankrupcy so easy on people?

My company is owed 60K for parts we did. One day the customer just decided he didnt want to pay for the parts he ordered. They are all perfect parts but he doesnt have the money to pay for them. We told him he needed to start making payments on the parts. He replied by telling us he would just file bankrupcy on it if we persued the issue.
Since its a small buisness that made the purchase he isnt personally liable for anything. He could close his company down and make us eat the entire 60K!

Brandon said...

I wonder how big this guys paychecks are coming from his company!

You must live in a high end neighborhood if you only owe around 280. I am not planning on having a morage over 80k. Have you looked at how much your paying the bank in interest every year? It will take me a little longer to get my house but I believe it will be nice knowing I own it and not the bank.

I worry all the time BB. I am a small business and still worry they can get at me if they really wanted to. Software is really complicated, shit goes wrong all the time, and "Piercing the Corporate Veil" is possible. We have a lawyer, 250 per hour (where did you get lawyers are cheap?), but I still worry, as did he upon incorporation of my business, that all the "i"s were dotted and the "t"s crossed.

How much do you pay him every year? maybe a few thousand? I cant imagine you keep him on the payroll 40hr/wk! Most lawyers can get alot done in a few hours that would take you or I several days or weeks.

Exactly correct. We have the smallest house, and many of the homes around us are at least 5500 square feet.

I can't imagine what some of these idiots are making, driving 75k Lexus's, 3 kids, and a stay at home wife. Amazing.

Brandon said...

How? It is my understanding that in most cases your completely protected and that a lawsuit can only attack your company, unless your not keeping your personal finances seperate. Example, letting your company own all your stuff, like your truck.

I am really saying you should read the millionaire next door. Those people sound like they do have inheritances, are subsidized by wealthy parents or are hyper consumers. All of which are very bad. What will happend to those people when they lose their 350k/yr job and cant find another one? Or their parents die? or they run out of inheritance?

Raygun-

You did good buying low in your neighborhood. As they spend more money on their homes, your home will go up in value. Smart!

I agree BB, but the guy across the street lost his job at Lucent, electrical engineer, and now hes working in CA. They couldn't sell the house, have 5 kids I think, and drive a Cadillac Escilade (1 year old). He was laid off at least 1.5 years ago.

I dont know BB, smart today, dumb tomorrow...

We are doing fine, no debt(except house).

My dear wife says I can write a book any time I want. I really want to, but the money is too good now to stop working. (I know my verbage is not that great, but ideas are what make great books)

Those guys make bank, but good for them! Why do people by new cars? Its stupid, you lose so much of your net worth when you invest in expensive cars. Buy a 3yr old car like most millionaires do.

Again, absolutely right! I dont agree with your ideas of investing in gold but the debt free except the house in genius! I just wish more people would figure that out.

Do you support Obama in his attempt to get more credit to people that are already hurting for cash?

Or buy a new one and hang onto it for 10 years+ (my wife won't let us buy used...)

We are thinking about another new car, and it will be a high end Lexus, that I know will last for 12+ years.

I am debt free except my property, which will be my house in the near future. I have friends who owe money on every major purchase: Boats, cars, quads and homes. Most of which are going down in value every year plus they are paying the bank huge amounts of interest on they money they borrowed. Then they cant figure out why they are always hurting for cash and how I can be going to Europe.
It really seems that most people figure this stuff out very late in their lives.

That would be the next step down from buying a used car. Below that would be trading in your new car every year or two.

I believe most cars lose about 60% of their value in the first 3-5yrs. Let someone else take that hit for you then drive your 3yr old car for 9yrs instead of 12yrs.

Brandon said...

Why doesnt your wife want to drive a used car?

"ullllll seeeeee", Bono.

BB wait till you get married then tell me the "truth".

Half the time, I just don't have the time or patience to argue with her.

I am sure glad I dont have to fight with my girlfriend about money. I drive a $3000 car and she drives a $1700 car. Both run and drive just fine and were paid for with cash. I just dont see a need to spend 15K or more on a car.

RayGun said...

BB, my wife and I, combined, probably drive... guessing, 7k miles per year.

I can afford a really nice car, as most of my neighbors have, but why, since I never drive anywhere. Both our cars are around 6 years old, but drive and appear nearly brand new, because they have so few miles on them.

Everyone's circumstances are different...

BB, I know what Clinton's policies did for my life.

He cut the military, and paid me around 25k to get out of the USAF early (reduction in force incentives), then steered me into college, as the government paid for my college education. I, with my infinite wisdom, originally went into college as a paralegal.

The government pressured me to consider computers, which I eventually decided to do on my own.

I graduated around 11 years ago.

So he, Clinton, Gore, whatever, figured computers were going to be this big, almost 15 years ago...

BB, the internet, software engineering, was virtually nothing, 15 years ago.

They are not that dumb...

CJP said...

Ray Gun, what you say Clinton's policies did for your life is what the government should be doing for as many people as possible. We would like to see as many Americans as possible live the good life, and government programs which facilitate education for as many people as possible are the best policies for the strength and future of America.

Is this something you could have done without the governments help? Yes, I imagine it would have been harder but could you have done it yourself?

BB, I have 5.5 years of college, and did it in 4 years. My grade point average was 3.89 out of 4. No way I could of done that without help. Not free help either.

The government owed me, as I was single throughout my tours. An airman basic, with kids, coming into the USAF, was making as much money as I was after 10 years of service. I figure the government and me are about even.

I agree with helping out our soldiers. You guys risk more than any of us could imagine but what about everyone else? Those who dont work and dont try, should they get money from the government for doing nothing?

It would appear that conservatives are the number one political idiology.

Liberals only represent about 20% while about 40% consider themselves conservatives.

BB, I say make welfare recipients show up and pick up trash, watch each others kids, etc.

Some kind of heavily government subsidized school/college/trade school would only help the US.

It could especially help single mothers pressured into having children they can't take care of, by religious zealots. I think the zealots should be taking care of those children. I'm sure the zealotry would quickly stop when a buck was on the line.

Amen to Mammon.

CJP said...

Well said, Ray Gun. Mammon always trumps Zealotry. In the case of many TV Evangelist preachers, Mammon and Zealotry go hand in hand. They are equal partners.
