Time for the Democrats to Get Loud and Fearless
Here's a major reason why the Republicans are still a viable party: they don't mind getting loud. They're willing to flagrantly lie out loud, while also making a huge production out of insignificant and contradictory nonsense that heretofore was never even considered to be a political trespass -- shamelessly and unapologetically amplifying it all to a level of noise that forces the press and voters alike to pay attention.
The Democrats could learn a thing or two about this. More presently.
For all of their faults, the Republicans are absolutely using the whole political animal, so to speak. Like an ancient tribe of hunter-gatherers, they're somehow able to butcher every carcass and turn all of the lies, gaffes and misstatements into something useful. Something that will command attention. Put another way, the Republican strategy seems to be: there's no such thing as bad press, so get loud.
Over the weekend, Sarah Palin appeared in Nashville at the Tea Party convention and while criticizing the president for using a teleprompter -- a device that all politicians, presidents and TV personalities have used since the technology was first invented -- she had the words "tax cuts" scrawled on her hand (or else there was a chance she might forget).
A Republican who might forget to say "tax cuts" is like a preacher who might forget to say "Jesus Christ." But there she was. The leader of the Republican Party -- so ill-prepared, so incapable of even the most basic political skills that she had to write a secret crib sheet on her hand to help her remember to say "tax cuts." Say nothing of the fact that Miss Drill-Baby-Drill had to write "energy" on her hand also.
In her defense, I understand Lincoln had to write "slavery" and "Civil War" on his hand so he wouldn't forget. So there's that.
And yet the Republicans don't mind getting loud about it. She's just like regular folks, they say. She's just like you, they say. This makes her qualified to be president, they say. (The Republicans are even loud about repeating colossal mistakes. Even after George W. Bush nearly destroyed the Republican brand, they're doubling down on the stupid by elevating Sarah Palin. Just remarkable.)
Elsewhere, Rep. Eric Cantor released a statement about the president's invitation to the Republicans to attend a televised health care summit later this month. The statement lead off with the words "government takeover." So right there, when greeted with an outreached hand, Cantor insulted the reform bill by referencing Frank Luntz's completely exaggerated "government takeover" line.
John Boehner, meanwhile, held a press conference in which he discussed the president's bipartisan outreach. And at one point Boehner used the epithet "Democrat majority." Out loud and on television, Boehner used a pejorative term for the Democratic Party designed to emphasize the "rat" syllable. I'm actually shocked he didn't accidentally refer to the president as "Osama."
And Tuesday night, Newt Gingrich flat out lied to Jon Stewart about the nationality of the Shoe Bomber. When Stewart noted that Richard Reid was read his Miranda Rights, Gingrich quickly responded by saying that Reid was, and is, an American citizen. It was a kneejerked lie. Reid is British. Painted into a corner by reality, Gingrich just made shit up (not unlike his awesome "WHOOPS! What If The South Won the Civil War?" book). Fox News Channel does this all the time, by the way. They're so cynical about their audience that they'll go on the air with demonstrably false information, knowing that no one eating their bullshit will bother to look it up. Then, if they're called out by an independent fact-checker, they'll issue a correction days later. Maybe.
Here's where it gets crazy. The Republicans filibustered the jobs bill this week. They filibustered it. Do I need to spell out how wrong that is?
Now, I've been reluctant to rip into the Democrats, mainly because, despite myths to the contrary, Congress and the White House have been able to accomplish some pretty big goals in just a year. Positive goals. Accomplishments that will help real people.
The only problem is that they're not loud enough about these things. They're not loud enough about the Republican obstructionism and treachery. Consequently, other players are writing the script and the Obama administration, along with congressional Democrats, are being mischaracterized. By not fighting back against these mischaracterizations with the full force of their political majorities, they look weak.
Looking at the list of Democratic achievements along with the list of Republican lies and blunders, there's obviously plenty of ammunition. But most of it is being allowed to rot on the vine -- at least so far, even though November is growing larger in the window.
For example, that jobs bill filibuster. Those of us keeping up the congressional activity know about it, but how many rank and file voters know that the Republicans tried to block a bill that would create jobs in the aftermath of a deep recession? I have to ask: if the Republicans filibuster a jobs bill, and no one makes a big stink about it, does it make a sound?
Instead of going on every news show on television and screaming about the Republican filibuster in the same way the Republicans scream about teleprompters, "Democrat Party," and "government takeovers," the Democrats did... what? Not much of anything really.
Smart.
At the same time, the Democrats were contemplating a bit of clever politics this week by tricking the Republicans into voting on Rep. Paul Ryan's so-called "shadow budget," which calls for privatizing Medicare and Social Security. Forcing the Republicans to vote on privatizing Social Security and Medicare is a terrific idea, of course. But let's say the Democrats were to go forward with such a plan. Who's going to know about it? Those of us in the blogosphere. People who watch Morning Joe, maybe. But will your neighbor? Or that co-worker who doesn't know which party to support right now? Probably not, because the Democrats probably wouldn't get loud about it.
And what of the president's big health care summit? If the White House successfully calls the Republican bluff, and they back out, will the White House get loud about it? I don't know. Maybe now that David Plouffe is back in the fold. But so far, they haven't been as effective as they could be with making a big deal out of the Republican nincompoopery and contradictions. (Question Time, to their credit, was a big step in the right direction.)
All told, the Democrats are generally on the right side of these fights, and their opponents are handing them pure political gold. Epic win material. Yet, instead of capitalizing on it, they're remaining silent and acquiescing to a marginalized, obstructionist party.
Crank it up, boys, or get ready for disaster in November.

I love bombarding you Brown Nosers with facts. You turn to crap and start babbling silly stuff like CutandPasteGun yesterday. I've already summarized his defaults when he becomes confused with real news. Get ready for some interesting information from Obama's Congressional Budget Office.

Here's something interesting. Remember when you Brown Nosers hated when Bush wanted to track terrorists overseas phone calls.
Now, get this Brown Nosers, Obama says that you have "no reasonable right of privacy". People on cell phones no longer have privacy rights under King Obama. Now the feds want to track all calls. Brown Nosers unite with me!! You hated when Bush did it to "terrorists" so you must hate it when Obama does it to "us citizens".

I think that the Tea Party Movement is an INTERNATIONAL embarrassment. "Foreigners" read the USA news as well and are far more sophisticated than most USA citizens realize. LOL

"The Tea Party Movement Is a National Embarrassment"
Excerpt:
According to Hetherington and Weiler, authoritarians tend to rely more on emotion and instinct in decision-making, view politics in black and white, resent confusion or ambiguity in the social order, and are suspicious of specific groups who they believe could alter that order (typically gays and immigrants). The difference between authoritarians and nonauthoritarians, according to the authors, becomes far more pronounced during tumultuous economic or social periods when there are more perceived "threats." During such times, authoritarians in particular lose accuracy motivation and, "become much less interested than nonauthoritarians in seeking information that [is] balanced in its approach, and much more interested in pursuing one-sided information that reinforc[es] existing beliefs." Or in other words, they are highly susceptible to misinformation campaigns, the likes of which pervaded the health care reform debate last summer.
Most every characteristic of an authoritarian worldview lends itself well to the impassioned rhetoric of the Tea Party movement and the shrewd players operating behind the scenes and atop the soap box. The movement's overly simplified, often-confused solutions to complex problems align with authoritarians' Manichean worldview. That Tom Tancredo's anti-immigrant laced speech at last weekend's convention was well received comes as no surprise. And that this is the group who so often embraces proven falsehoods and spin-narratives to defend its anti-administration agenda should speak for itself with regards to accuracy motivation.
Despite the criticism it receives, the Tea Party continues to be praised as a political force. It is loud, passionate, and generally unconcerned with pesky things like facts or reasoned, practical solutions to the country's problems. This bodes ill for 2010's political environment, and it is a shameful representation of what constitutes an American political or social movement. While the Tea Party may alienate some who see it for the profit-machine that it is, others who share the fearful, intolerant authoritarian worldview that it is increasingly coalescing around will be lured in and pitted against the very people in power who could actually help them. That this movement has grown political legs is too bad, and by Hetherington and Weiler's account, it means even more polarization is yet to come.

Boy, you're really on point with the important issues. I guess you'll just ignore all the facts I've put up Obama's destruction of the economy.

What do you think about the DEMOCRATS trying to get rid of the 2/3rd majority requirement for raising taxes here in Washington State?

Com'on HOTR! Don't make their heads all fuzzy with FACTS! They can't handle that!
(and you have to talk really slowly for Anon2)
You left something out...
That both Democrats and Republicans are largely both bought and paid for by the same corporatists. So the idea that Democrats stand as a progressive liberal front is pure fiction. Progressives have been marginalized in the Democratic Party just as Libertarians have been marginalized in both the Democratic and Republican party. Note too that both main parties have also colluded to make it impossible for third parties to have a snowball's chance in hell of getting anywhere. As a result, they have less reason to speak up, except for phony theatrics and to drum up ratings for the same corporately controlled media.
We are in the throes of Modern Feudalism or Corporatism. 1/3 of people in the USA work for government, 1/3 for large corporations, the rest are mostly unemployed, on welfare, retired, or part of the devastated shrinking middle class self-employed small business owners. What happens when there are only 5 large corporations and everyone works for one of them or the government or doesn't work at all? That's where it's going. There are only about 9,000 very large companies in the USA. it won't take very long for them to merge down to a handful.
Small business creates jobs, and none of the policies by Obama, the Democrats, or the Republicans favor small business, the middle class etc... They are effectively eating the goose that lays the golden egg. And when the goose is gone - all that remains is serfdom. Fight back now, fight back hard, or the rest of your life and your grandchildren's lives may be totally gone.
"What do you think about the DEMOCRATS trying to get rid of the 2/3rd majority requirement for raising taxes here in Washington State?"
BB, I don't think that's the dems, I think its the breeder cons. They want more taxes to pay for thousands of their off spring. God commanded you all to reproduce, and you all want everyone to pay for their upbringing. Why can't people pay for their own kids?

Wake up Raygun, the FACTS are looking you in the face and you still want to blame the republican.

I vote down most every state tax that comes along. Stinkin cons created such a mess that most states are on the verge of collapse and some see the only way out is to raise taxes.
BB I agree, state government wages and benefits are probably out of control. Those are becoming the good jobs now. Salaries and jobs need to be cut. But more cuts will probably only further the depression.
Thanks cons for doing Allahs will and destroying the west financially. Your love of war, love of the military, love of money, played right into the enemies hands.

There isnt alot of extra tax income from Alaska besides the oil. So I think its a fair comparison, but how about Texas, your least favorite state?
"but how about Texas, your least favorite"
BB I lived in the Dallas/Ft Worth area for around 3 years, mostly in the USAF, for whatever its worth. Oil was a big part of Texass also. Plus the housing boom never really went crazy there ever. On the other hand Calif was and is devastated by the housing bust.
Comon BB, you don't think the south and Ak tends to be, hmmm, how should I say it, a little unfriendly to minorities?

"The Wire", using metaphors, and especially irony, really nails a lot of what we talk about on this site. Nails, literally and figuratively.
You actually get your "truth" from a television show? A drama, no less? Okay. Now I understand you better.
Well, Casey, most Cons get their "truth" from a television show -- a daily fictional creation called Fox News.
well, i've gotten my daily does of ignorant drivel. would you like to ban the right to vote against the democrats? how about free speech? would you stifle that too? all of you yuppies cried "treason" during the bush administration for their push to politicize the war on terror. now that you dems are in power you want to do the same thing. its a shame that you have no principles, and will stoop to the same level as bush but put the obama seal of approval on it.
at least everyone in the country new that bush was an evil bastard. but with obama you still have a huge number of people with their head in the clouds thinking he is the savior of america.
Well, Obama is the savior of America, Anonymouse. It's just that you Conservatives are too damn ignorant to realize it.
What you guys really needed was four more years of Bush-Cheney Conservative economic policies until millions of Americans were living in Bushvilles -- modern-day Hoovervilles.
Not only is Obama the savior of America -- he saved the country too fast. Not enough Americans got to feel the financial pain and agony that Conservative policies were in the process of inflicting on all of us ---- the economic destruction of America.
I honestly cant believe how gullable my fellow americans are too fall for the outright lies they tell on fox news. When the Republicans won the house, I felt embarassed to be an American. The only way to cope with is to view the year 2000 as the beggining of a dark age and to turn off your television. There are soo many things that are true about the dirty game republicans will play or as you said gaining the upperhand but at this point i say why waste your breath. ignorance is just to powerful force and when the house republicans get rolling we will see that. Thats the sad thing. Is that the republicans immediately started building up their hate news from day one and gained huge momentum from it. Its much easier to campaign on failures when the people are frustrated . The positive effects of obamas reighn are now being noticed but it may be too late now that john boner will soon take the reighns. People hate what they dont understand and somewhere lost their ability to think clearly. Its almost remaniscent of the propagnda that the nazis used. Fox news is ridiculously "unbalanced" and ignorance is dangerous as we witnessed during the holocaust. Americans need to realize fox is propaganda and not news. Msnbc is bias as well but fox news takes the cake. the whole cake.

Listen. Conservatives, it's the twenty-first century. You're old fashioned ideas of white supremacy, stealing from the poor to give to the rich (quite the opposite of legendary Robin Hood), and equality and freedom for all...who fit the description of a true Republican convervative, need to go. It's time for the Liberals to step in. Whenever I hear conservative drivel, I am truly ashamed to be called an American. The America that I would like to be familiar with has freedom, liberty, love, and equality for every single living being - white, black, gay, straight, rich, poor, tall, short, smiling, frowning.
And for all those who think Obama isn't doing his job, well, do you think you could run a country and try to revive it from the hell-hole it was when the Republicans were running it? I don't think so.
So that's all I have to say.
Love,
A Young Liberal Minded Lady
Bravo, Anonymous. I never heard anyone say it better, plainer or more to the point than that.
Way to go, Anon.
Thank you very much CJP. That meant a lot.

Well said for a liberal who has her head shoved up her own ass! Why dont you argue facts instead of spreading more of your liberal misconceptions? None of the above is supported by conservatives. We only want equality for all Americans and that means paying your fair share in taxes. Are tax code has been destroyed by you simple minded liberals. (Not that is was that great to begin with)
FLAT TAX - Everyone pays the exact same percent, rich or poor!
Equality? Then please, enlighten me about your views on Gay Rights. And the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy? Equality for all?
"Equality? Then please, enlighten me about your views on Gay Rights. And the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy? Equality for all?"
I believe in equality for all. I think gays should have the right to be miserable like the rest of us.
There is one thing I dont understand about gays. Why do some ACT gay? I have met gays who you would never know they were gay but others feel they need to announce it to the whole world. So perhaps ACTING gay is the reason for dont ask dont tell, maybe its a matter of conduct.
Perhaps you would like to enlighten me on your view towards the flat tax? EVERYONE paying the exact same percent. No more progressive tax rates!
Well, have you heard of Freedom of Expression? Freedom of Speech? The first amendment covers that. Every person on this earth is different. We all talk differently, walk differently, wear unique clothing, and have our own, wonderful personalities. Can you imagine how boring the planet would be if everyone acted the same? Why would someone choosing to be themself bother you? There is no such thing as 'acting' gay; it's called individuality. And I support it.
As for taxes, I don't quite see how it's fair for someone very, very poor to pay the same amount as someone very, very rich, especially if the taxes were to be as high as many republicans would like. I must say that I worry more about civil rights issues than economic issues, but I do happen to lean more towards somewhat socialist ideas. This is because I believe that we need to be working hard to help all the poor people out there, rather than working hard to support the rich. I must admit though, that I need to educate myself further on the subject of taxes.
And besides, why not announce it to the world?? GAY IS OKAY!!!
Republicans are americas true
evil terrorist. We as poor and
middle income americans need to stage
a massive national strike and boycott jury duty, don't pay parking/traffic/misc. tickets and fines, and stop these nazi, terrorist
republicans before they turn america
into a capitalist/jew/money worshipping dictatorship police. The only good republican is a dead one. The time for a 2nd american revolution and defeat the terrorist republicans, and return
america to its free greatness is now. Burn in hell all republicans
On the tax issue: Let us assume people should be paid by an amount proportional to their contribution to society.
The reason for progressive tax rate is that people who gets payed very little in fact contribute more to society per dollar - they lack the bargaining power.
It is clear that in this society, the ruling class is the rich investors, and the corporations is their way of controlling the society. With concentrated power, they are getting paid less and less because of their hard work that creates value for other people, but increasingly by their manipulation of housing, currency, stocks and shares, bonds, commodities... this is an partial and indirect mean of enslavement of the disadvantaged.
Hence progressive tax is needed to balance out this distortion in society so that people who does work actually gets rewarded proportionally to their contribution to society - rather being ripped off by the investor elite - really, i personally think they have the collective (and probably unconscious) tendency to create inflation by skewing expectations and controlling the interest rate and erode the wealth of the poor.
The point is this: for those of you who want the government to be smaller, you are doing so because you believe that government is less efficient in creating benefit to society than the private sector. This is not always correct.
Nowadays, the US is increasingly concentrating power to the rich investor class - they are the new "invisible government" who controls collectively the nation perhaps more so than the government (because of its bitter political struggle).
Now, explain to me why is concentrating power to the investor elite better than concentrating power to the political elite? At least in America the formal democracy still exists; but in the private sector no one has direct responsibility to society!
"Now, explain to me why is concentrating power to the investor elite better than concentrating power to the political elite? At least in America the formal democracy still exists; but in the private sector no one has direct responsibility to society!"
-Anon
You really have NO CLUE who the wealthy are!!! Why dont you read a few books on them and then get back to us. You can start with the millionaire next door. Then you will understand that the people your talking about are not all the "investor elite". It is crazy the number of taxes the wealthy pay, everything from income taxes to estate taxes. I think estate taxes are around 35%! Why should the government get 35% of anyones estate, its already been taxed!
"As for taxes, I don't quite see how it's fair for someone very, very poor to pay the same amount as someone very, very rich, especially if the taxes were to be as high as many republicans would like."
-Anon
How is that not fair? If you dont make very much you dont pay very much, simple! If you make a ton you will pay a ton, in taxes! You cant get anymore fair than that.
I dont understand how you liberals think that giving the poor money will encourage them to earn their own money! All I see are more and more people falling into a system that doesnt reward you for trying.
replublicans are not destroyingour country. The demercrats are.
We all know that people are begining to understand the truth
that Obama put us way further in debt
