Conservatives Oppose Protecting The Public from Predatory Bank Lending Practices

From Consumers' Union -- April 8, 2010:

The banks love fine print and loopholes. That’s how they managed to hike millions of Americans’ credit card interest rates before a new law went into effect in February clamping down on their abusive tactics.

But that new law can still help customers — in it, Congress told the banks to review those interest rate hikes and bring unfair rates back down for responsible cardholders. Of course, the banks are trying to make sure that the Federal Reserve Board’s regulations don’t really rollback rate increases.

We need your voice now to counter the banks’ efforts! The Senate is preparing to vote on reforming oversight of the banks and Wall Street — send Senators a strong message that credit card rates need to come back down as part of the reform package.

Email your Senators to include strong credit card rate rollback in bank reform. Give customers a fighting chance!

The financial reform bill is our last, best chance to give Americans’ socked with last year's interest rate hikes a legitimate way to get their concerns addressed. Credit card interest rates cover lending risk, but when the banks can borrow money for close to 0%, why are they charging good customers who pay on time upwards of 30%?

The financial reform bill should stop the unbridled greed and dangerous risk-taking on Wall Street that tanked our economy, destroyed home values and retirement accounts, and eliminated millions of jobs. The bill needs to:

Prioritize a strong, independent consumer protection watchdog with no loopholes;
Help reverse credit card rate hikes for responsible cardholders;
Stop taxpayer bailouts of ‘too big to fail’ banks or other big financial companies.

Take a second to email your Senators now! They need to hear from you, not just from the banks!

Wall Street and financal institutions spent nearly $200 million lobbying Washington last year, so we've got our work cut out for us. After you send an email, please forward this to 10 other people so they can lend their voices, too.

And you’ll be hearing from us in the coming weeks on more ways you can help make sure financial reform works for hard-working Americans. Thanks for all you do!

I agree with this one. The abuses are huge. This needs to be changed and I doubt that there will be much trouble passing it. This is not a partisan issue.
However, at the same time Americans need to accept some responsibility. I have reviewed many a credit report and have seen some scary stuff out there. I have seen regular, wage earners who have pages and pages of credit cards with high balances. We have become a nation of a "I want it now" mentality, then when a bump in the road comes along, it is all the credit card providers fault. We must change our attitudes toward debt as well as fix the practices of the lenders.

We need to regulate, so that the lenders can't lend to the unqualified.

Regulation. That is all that you can come up with. How about personal responsiblity for a change? If people get themselves in debt it is their own fault. You can't regulate stupidity.
Let's regulate the stuff that we eat---no wait...you guys want to do that too.

Would you liberals make up your minds, first you want banks to lend to low income families and now your saying you want to block loans to the low income families!

Why cant those people with existing balances on their high interest cards just open a new card with a lower interest rate and tranfer their balance? Or why dont they just pay off their balances and throw the credit cards in the trash?

Did you see the unemployment rate for 18-24yr olds? Do you think raises in min. wage has driven up the unemployment rates for 18-24yr olds?

Casey said...

Absolutely! Read John Stossel's, "Give Me a Break". I believe he covers the matter of minimum wage, as well as many other effects of government regulation and intervention. It is an eye opener. One of the major turning points for me in my journey from liberal to Libertarian.

Move to China cons, pretty sure they don't have minimum wage.

I say lets make everyone pay the full cost of their actions. If they have high blood pressure from eating too much salt, fine, but they should have to pay the higher medical costs put on the shoulders of everyone. Same with all your God given children. You cons need to pay your kids way. At 13k per year per year for education, I bet that would put a crimper on the con production rate. Because we know cons love their money, even more than their God given children.

Beautifully said, Ray Gun. Like poetry. No one can put it any better than that.

And I suppose you dislike money, RG?

If you have high blood pressure from eating to much salt, you already do pay more. You would have higher premiums but its you, Raygun, who want those people to pay less and health people to pay more. Example: Obamacare!

Does that mean your talking out both ends of your lib lips, again?

That is so true, but for one thing. Not everyone that uses alot of salt developes high blood pressure, yet the Progressives want to take it away or punish all of us for the ones that do. Progressives want to dictate to all of us how they think we should be living our lives. RG keeps saying that the "conservatives want to tell everyone what to do" when in reality it is just the opposite. 9 times out of 10, when you find legislation that encrouches on our personal freedoms, you find a Progressive behind it. And they always use the arguement that "it costs society too much" --- an argument that doesn't seem to bother them when they talk about the cost of another federal program, or higher taxes, or the National Debt.

I have to be honest. I have asked myself why I stick with this blog. I know that I am not going to change any of them. Nothing that I ever say is going to give them that "AH HA" moment. Their minds don't work that way. The best that I can come up with is that the Progressive thought process intrigues me. This has been a social experiment of sorts for me, and I am getting a huge education in why things are as they are in the world today!
I am sure that you have noticed that there is a desire to re-write history to fit their world view, and a refusal to acknowledge facts. Everyone that they disagree with is a "liar", and they adjust their social conscience to fit the situation. There is no consistancy in their moral compass, and in their world, the ends definitely justify the means. This is what I have learned so far. I am not saying that they are bad people, just that they process things, and think differently.
Example: The economy is getting worse by the day. Another 484,000 jobs lost just last week. The National Debt is out of control and all but a few (Progressive)economists are beginning to FREAK OUT. The Stimulus was a failure, and Obama has not kept the promises made during the campaign. He has filled his Administration and cabinet with liars and cheats and people heavily involved in the financial meltdown. Yet, what do we hear from the Progressives? "Obama will pull us out" and my favorite, "the economy is showing signs of recovery", even though the facts do not support that view.
My very favorite was when I challenged one of the bloggers who was condemning the US for slavery, on THEIR OWN countries slavery issues, the response that I got was that "historians lie". Historians LIE? Are you kidding me?
See what I am saying? I challenged this person's already formed opinion and world view with FACTS and in this instance it was the historians that were liars. No attepmt to defend her country, or to acknowledge that maybe her country was also guilty. No. The answer that I got was that historians were lying! You can't hope to reason with that kind of thought process.
