Cruising

Dearest Casey, Brandon, Ray Gun, Anon 2, Various and Assorted Anonymouses, and all my other devoted Pen Pals:

Tomorrow I head off on a two-week cruise from LA to the glorious Hawaiian Islands.

I know how concerned Casey has been in the past when I drop out for a few days, and I greatly appreciate Casey's concern.

So, please let me re-assure you all that I am perfectly fine --- just cruising on a Summer (almost) Afternoon.

I'll try to chime in with a few comments from time to time, while At Sea.

Meanwhile, I hope you will all keep the faith, and continue with your frank exchange of opinions.

"Frank Exchange of Opinions" is a phrase which emerged at the United Nations during the height of the Cold War when the USA and the USSR threatened to nuke each other. "A Frank Exchange of Opinions" was considered the final phase just before "Mutually Assured Destruction".

After Hobnobbing With Bankers, McConnell Attacks Wall Street Reform

"In February, the Wall Street Journal reported that Republicans were "stepping up their campaign to win donations from Wall Street. In discussions with Wall Street executives, Republicans are striving to make the case that they are banks' best hope of preventing President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats from cracking down on Wall Street."

Two months later, it seems the GOP is relying on the same strategy. In return for obstructing Democratic legislation to hold Wall Street CEOs accountable, Republican lawmakers are pressing bankers for financial help heading into the November elections.

FoxBusiness.com reported that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman John Cornyn (R-TX) had a "private meeting" with "25 Wall Street executives, many of them hedge fund managers." After listening to "numerous complaints the executives have with the bill," the GOP lawmakers reportedly assured the bankers that Republicans would be their ally in the fight. After discussing likely Republican electoral gains this November, "McConnell and Cornyn made it clear they need Wall Street's help."

A day after the story broke about McConnell's "private meeting" with Wall Street bigwigs, he stormed onto the Senate floor to spout false attacks on Democratic efforts to hold those bankers accountable. The timing was no coincidence.

Republicans are brazenly playing politics by putting the needs of big banks and credit card companies above struggling American families. Now is the time to hold Wall Street accountable for causing the worst recession in a generation.

True financial regulatory reform would restore fairness to America's banking system, get rid of confusing fine print, and hold Wall Street's bad actors accountable for getting us into this mess."

I will tell you what "dirty politics" is---how about making deals for votes, as on the healthcare bill. Now THAT is dirty politics. Backroom deals and downright blackmail (as in turning back on the water for Central Calif farmers in exchange for a vote in favor)that is dirty.
As for the Wall Street banker support?
Explain to me why Obama has so many of these people in his Administration and on his advorory committees.
How about Tim Geithner! Where do you think HE came from?

They refuse to hear or find out the facts for themselves, and would rather take the opinions of others as their "truth". (the reason that so much of their "evidence" turns out to be opinion pieces written by people that get posted on Huffington)
Instead of forming their opinions based on FACTS, they work backward and look for only the parts that support their already formed opinions, disregarding the rest. Things that don't fit their views are discounted. Facts are not responded to, and when they are, they are called "lies".

It is a unique filtering system.

One of the things that I have noticed---more so lately. They have a moving moral compass...Or "the ends justify the means" mentality. They can't fight or debate on common ground, so they resort to these immoral tactics. The name calling, the "infiltration of the TeaParty Movement", the slander and the violence (yes. I said violence, because the only violence at teaparty gatherings so far has been from the left)
They want to shut them up. They would love to take their right to speak out away. However, they were screaming during the Bush years about "censorship" and their "right to speak out" Remember that? Now, I am not going to pass judgment on this bill because I haven't actually read it yet. Have you, Anon2? Didn't think so.
However having been a resident of Arizona until not too long ago I can tell you first hand that the illegal immigrant problem has become a serious issue. (and don't call me a racist, because nothing could be further from the truth! I have hispanics in my family, and I love the culture and the people. My heart breaks for these people that want to come here!)
BUT, I have watched as the gang problem has grown, the drug problem---Heroin and Meth---has gotten to the elementary school level, and the crime rate has skyrocketed to where Phoenix is now 5th in the nation for crime. I believe in a guest worker program, but we have to know who is coming here, because quite frankly many that come up are gang members and criminals. The human trafficking in illigals have made them slaves to the coyotes that bring them up. They have been left to die in the back of locked trucks, raped, beaten and killed. They are exploited and used and mistreated, and their illegal statis makes them the perfect victims.

Arizona passed a law that is unconstitutional. Read up on it instead of attacking the writer.

Personally, I am dead set against illegal immigrants. One should apply to enter any country in a lawful way. Once caught they should be deported. But what about if they have kids that were born in the US? That's the big dilemma.

The illegals are human beings and perhaps many forget about that.

The ones that employ the illegals should be penalized so severely that they won't hire them anymore, not just a slap on the wrist. Then there is the fact that Americans love the lower prices due to exploitation of the illegals and therefore contribute to the problem.

I don't believe that I was assuming what you were thinking...I don't even want to go there.
Yes, they are human beings and I believe that I mentioned that my heart breaks for them, because I have seen some of the living conditions that these people have come from. I happen to have a sister in law that is illegal, and I am certainly concerned about the effect that this will have on her. She is a sweet person.
However, here is the problem and why I believe that a guest worker program is in order.
These people come up here and because they are illegal, they are mistreated and exploited at every turn. Sadly, it is not just the white people who are doing the exploitation, it is the Mexican legals that do it in most cases. Knowing that these people have no recourse, is an open invitation for them to be taken advantage of.
There is no simple solution to the problem and yes, the employers need to be held accountable. A guest worker program would help that.
I am sure that you are also making reference to your own country when you speak of the indigenous peoples being overrun by Europeans, right?

That is now Arizona. Yet INS doesn't even show up.

Several years ago I was involved in a car accident where the girl that changed lanes into me was only 14, had no license, no registration, and naturally no insurance. She was here illegally, and the police came out. I was injured. The police could do nothing. They called INS, but INS refused to come out and take this girl into custody. She was let go. A citizen of the US would have been arrested under those circumstances, yet she went about her life with no consequences because she was here illegally and the Feds refused to enforce the laws.
You think that makes our auto insurance premiums go up?
Under this new Bill, the local police would have the power to detain someone like that.
The boarders need to be secured. Employers need to be held accountable, a guest worker program needs to be implemented, and the US needs to know who it is that is already here.

It is interesting to note that these demonstrators are throwing bottles at police and vandelizing businesses and personal property, yet it is the TeaParty people that are being called "dangerous".; April 27, 2010 6:09 AM

HaHaHa! That's funny...What check? I don't know a single soul that got a "tax rebate check" from the Obama Administration! There were none. They didn't exist. Are you referring to the "tax cut" where we got to keep a whole $8.00 per paycheck MORE? Oh we just need to use that to pay for that new additional tax on gas, and everything else that they are adding new taxes to. Of course that $8.00 won't come NEAR to touching the new taxes, but who cares, right?

Your so full of shit! I the only tax rebate I recieved was from Bush for a few hundred dollars. If you refering to the adjustments to my federal withholding from my paycheck, your miss led! My tax bill was the same at the end of the year and I simply got a smaller refund. Stop believing everything Obama and friends tell you and open your eyes. Government spending is increasing and taxes must increase to pay for it, thus EVERYONE will have to pay more.

Lets begin by saying that as a Jew, I resent the constant comparison to Nazi Germany. To put this in the same catagory is to trivialize the suffering of Jews during the time of the Holocaust. Knock it off, because it is beginning to get offensive.

Next: If this really happened, we would be hearing about it for sure.

Next: If you look at the rules and regs of being a legal immigrant to this country, you will find that you are required to have your green card, or "papers" as you people like to call it, on you at all times.

Next---and more importantly, this is where this story becomes total bullshit: if Abdon (a Hebrew name)is a truckdriver, was DRIVING his truck at the time that he was "pulled over", shouldn't he have had his CDL License on him? Maybe he should have been put in jail for driving a TRUCK without a license.

Lastly: This law has not even taken effect yet!

I SAW the crime rate go up. It became unsafe to have your windows open. The nightly news would warn of not sleeping with your windows open. Yes. It was a slice of Heaven living there.

Watch unbiased news on CNN now and then for a while, that's where I got the info about crime rates went down in Arizona while the population increased a lot for the mentioned 3 years.

Your so full of shit! I the only tax rebate I recieved was from Bush for a few hundred dollars. If you refering to the adjustments to my federal withholding from my paycheck, your miss led! My tax bill was the same at the end of the year and I simply got a smaller refund. Stop believing everything Obama and friends tell you and open your eyes. Government spending is increasing and taxes must increase to pay for it, thus EVERYONE will have to pay more.

Did you read that story, Brandon? Seriously, you would have to be a moron to believe it. Personally, I enjoyed the Hebrew name of Abdon. The name is not even Biblical---but it IS Hebrew. Nice touch. No mention of why this guy was driving ANY vehicle without a license on him! (I think that law requires a state ID---not birth certificate.)

Yes, she is. In addition---I don't know if you saw it----but she claims that she saw on CNN that the crime rate in Arizona has gone DOWN in the past 5 years! THAT ONE was pretty funny too! Instead of fact checking, and going to the FBI website that I provided, I think she got pissed off at me and told me that I didn't know what I was talking about!
There are tons of websites with the stats on this, and CLEARLY the violent crime rate in the state of Arizona is the HIGHEST in the nation, beating out NY and CA. The kidnapping rate is 2nd in the world.
Yeah. I am STILL waiting to hear about poor Abdon and his imaginary plight!
