At a fundraiser yesterday in Austin, Texas, President Obama trotted out his latest joke, chuckling as he told it. The punch line came after his usual story about refusing to give Republicans back the keys to the economy because they drove it into a ditch.
Speaking of cars, he said: "You want to go forward, what do you do? You put it in 'D.' When you go backward, what do you do? You put it in 'R.'"
Then, with another chuckle, he added: "I'm just sayin' that's not a coincidence."
If Obama quits his day job, he might want to credit his friend, Democratic Gov. Chet Culver of Iowa, who apparently came up with the quip a few months ago.
According to Yahoo News, the governor joked in mid-May that "all you need to know about who to vote for you learned in Driver's Ed: Put the state in 'D' [Democrat] to go forward, or in 'R' [Republican] to go backwards."
Obama is trying to Drive the USA forward, into the 21st Century, focusing on Clean Air, new sources of power such as wind and Solar energy, modernizing America's infra-structure -- highways, mass transportation, etc. -- providing affordable health care for every American, creating new jobs by establishing additional stimulus funds, creating a fairer tax structure, not out-sourcing US military jobs to private contractors and profiteers, etc.
In total contrast, Republicans are trying to drive the car in R and return us to the 19th Century as swiftly as possible. The GOP is a One-Trick Pony. Continuing and expanding massive tax cuts to America's wealthiest families are the only things the Republican Party has to offer. In addition, of course, to their social restrictions on peoples lives -- outlawing abortions, prohibiting gay marriages, gutting Social Security and Medicare, and scuttling any other government law or program that was designed to help working families instead of corporations. Republicans really miss the Gilded Age and they want to bring it back tomorrow.
Now, thanks to the Herculean efforts of Tea Partiers, Republicans may very well soon be able to drive the GOP car in R, at top speed --- over the edge of a cliff.

You know, only mentioning HALF of the story is cheating.
Our economy really sucks. Obamanomics is not working. It is getting worse, actually --- no matter WHAT they say, the facts and numbers don't lie.
