Alan Grayson Blasts The Tea Party

March 11, 2011:

Did They Die In Vain?

On May 4, 1886, in Haymarket Square in Chicago, the public rallied peacefully in support of 40,000 workers in Chicago who had gone on strike, to win the right to organize. The police attacked, and eight died.

On July 6, 1892, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, 3800 workers went on strike, to win the right to organize. Three hundred hired and armed goons attacked them. Five people died.

On April 20, 1914, in Ludlow, Colorado, 1200 coal miners went on strike, to win the right to organize. The Colorado National Guard attacked their shantytown, and burned it to the ground. Nineteen people died. Two women and 11 children were asphyxiated, and they burned to death.

Here and around the world, many people have fought and died, so that you and I would have the right to organize.

And so that 250,000 public workers in Wisconsin would have that right, too.

This is not exactly a new idea. Six months after the Ludlow Massacre, President Wilson signed the Clayton Act, prohibiting the prosecution of union members under Antitrust Law. That was almost a century ago.

Two decades later, during the Franklin Roosevelt's first term as President, he signed the National Labor Relations Act into law. It protects the right to organize. That was over 75 years ago.

The right to organize also is a fundamental principle of international law. Over 150 countries have ratified the "Right to Organize" Convention, an international treaty. It was adopted in 1949, over 60 years ago.

So why are we even talking about this, 11 years into the 21st Century?

Because the teabaggers want to "take back America." They want to take it back, all right – take it all the way back to the 19th century. When there was no right to organize. When people worked for a dollar a day. When grown men competed against children for jobs. When women were barred from most jobs entirely. When you worked until you died.

Not to mention slavery.

I want to see an America that is healthy and wealthy.

They want an America that provides cheap labor to our corporate overlords. An America where the middle class is chained by debt.

We didn't ask for this fight. But we have no choice except to fight back. For the survival of the middle class in America. For us, for our children, and for our grandchildren. And so that the victims in Haymarket, in Homestead and in Ludlow did not die in vain.

As Cardinal Spellman said 45 years ago, "it is a war thrust upon us, and we cannot yield to tyranny."

I'm ready to fight for what's right. What about you?

Courage,

Alan Grayson

It was a hard won fight with many lives lost.

If it weren't for unions, people would still work 80 hours weeks, no benefits, no vacations, no safety measures in the work place etc. etc.

Many think that only unions are reaping the benefits which is complete wrong.

The ones who don't belong to unions are getting about the same benefits that union members get, yet think that unions don't have a place in today's world. Completely false.

Now more than ever unions are necessary because the corporatists are working hard to get rid of the unions and feeding the non-union citizens the idea that they are overpaid etc. etc. Media and GOP government is very much co-operating with the Kochroaches and its ilk.

I saw a program recently about working conditions in China. Horrid conditions which can only be described as enslavement.

Without unions in the USA and in the Western world, the working conditions would deteriorate into a *Western China*.

Corporatists don't care because their only objective is to make obscene profits on the backs of workers. Money and Avarice have no soul or conscience.

A personal note:

Decades ago I joined a major oil co here. There was talk of some people wanting to set up a union in our office. Within a few weeks, those people disappeared. They were fired!

Anonymous do you really believe the lies that come out of your mouth? Today a few people do work 80+hrs a week but they get paid OT which is required by the government. Also, safety standards are set by the government. We do not need government and the unions. Government has taken the unions place and it is time to get rid of all unions.

"We do not need government and the unions. Government has taken the unions place and it is time to get rid of all unions."

The above is quite contradictory.

You do not need government nor unions?

The right wants a smaller government yet you're saying that government is not needed and in the same breath want to get rid of unions?

Gimme a break!! lol

Due to your desire to get rid of unions I must presume you're not a union member. Your wages as a machinist in the private sector must therefore be lower than if you were in the union. I've got it!! You're plain envious.

The benefits you have in the private sector without being a member of a union were fought for by the unions. You should be thankful to them rather than hating them.

The government certainly was nudged by the unions to implement certain standards like prohibiting child labor.

The right wants to abolish that law so that children will be allowed to work. If that would happen, you would be out of a job since you wouldn't be able to compete with a child's wages.

Minimum wage was established by the state governments. Some states do not even have a minimum wage. Google it.

That coalmine disaster some time ago (many deaths) was severely lacking in safety and had received hundred of cautions yet the owners did nothing to implement them.

Guess that Chile cares more about their (mine workers) than the USA does.

The states do not need to have a min wage since there is a federal min. wage, google it! Also, I was saying we dont need government AND unions controlling labor. why is it you simple minded union works can't look at the big picture? Higher wages and benifits make you more expendable. Child labor laws are stupid, when I was in school I wanted to work but I was only able to work on a dairy. Thanks liberal!

The people of the USA who want children to work instead of getting an eduction are working hard in contributing to a further dumbing down of the country.

You don't love your country and you don't want your country to succeed and be able to compete in a highly competitive world.

Imperialist USA is in decline already. You've got only yourselves to blame for that.

Crawl back to your Fox-hole.

I don't want all children to work! Calling 16 and 17 year old children is a bit of an overstatement. Good work ethic is what the youth of today needs. People like you who think young adults are not capable of working and getting an education are adding to the problems in America. Work hard and save, you will get ahead. Americans don't need government to give them everything they think they need.

"Imperialist USA"---Anon2

Well, there you have it. Anon2 has just shown her true colors.
We have a true Marxist. She is an idiot. Cant find a single Marxist country that is thriving, or has ever thrived, but still chasing the dream! Again. Thank God, she lives in Canada and cannot vote in our counrty!
